About the awards
The 5th annual Women in Construction Awards Gala Dinner will take place on 24 May 2017 co-located with the African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.
This exclusive Gala Dinner of no more than 200 guests is a collaborative platform dedicated to recognising excellence in Africa within the construction, cement and concrete industry.
The Awards categories will recognise those women who are Pioneers in Innovation within the built environment as well as identifying those "Young entrepreneur/rising stars'' - who have put themselves out there and have been identified as the ones "to watch" as they get a foothold within their sector.
The awards will also acknowledge organisations which have stepped up and developed women's roles through innovative training programmes and have demonstrated commitment to developing the careers of women in the industry.
This year's awards celebration will be attended by senior-level executives, key decision-makers and suppliers, within the construction, cement and concrete industry.

The Women in Construction Awards not only enable you to enjoy peer recognition of your achievements, which also provides for career evaluation and the celebration of achievements, but also career evaluation, the celebration of achievements, and the opportunity for you to be a change agent in Africa and role model for future leaders:
The number of women in technical / engineering has been of particular concern as women are still grossly under-represented, with the percentage of women graduates in engineering still below 20% in many countries in the continent, and the number of women actively employed in the construction sector being much lower.
The extensive PR campaigns showcasing the finalists is aimed at encouraging companies to employ and train more women in the sector and highlights the exciting opportunities for young women considering a career in construction.

The City of Cape Town's Transport Authority
The City of Cape Town's Transport Authority, Transport for Cape Town (TCT) is responsible for planning, costing, contracting, regulating, monitoring, evaluating, communicating, managing and maintaining the City of Cape Town's transport infrastructure, systems, operations, facilities and network. TCT is the custodian and authority over the entire ambit of the transport and related lifecycle for infrastructure in Cape Town. TCT aims to improve the transport system in a pioneering, industrious and fair manner, through setting the standards and managing a complex environment. Further, it is required to regulate efficient and safe, integrated, intermodal and inter-operable transport systems, as well as ensuring performance oriented service delivery for all citizens and visitors to Cape Town.
Excellence in Career Development Award:
Thobile Bhembe, Junior Site Agent Inyatsi Construction, South Africa
This year's Women in Construction Awards (WICA) aims to recognise the number of women in construction which has been of particular concern in recent years, as women are still under-represented, with the percentage of women graduates in engineering still below 20% in many countries in the continent. These awards will recognise those women who are Pioneers in Innovation within the built environment. Inyatsi Construction has taken this this call seriously and nominated their Site Agent of Inyatsi Associates, Thobile Bhembe as the leading example of how the construction industry has overcome the patriarchal sector.
Thobile has really made her name as the FIRST female site agent within Inyatsi Construction Group, meaning she is the only female site agent in all our subsidiaries across the sub-Saharan market (Swaziland, South Africa Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana). She's the first female site agent in a staff compliment of 3500 employees. A woman who is passionate and innovative, Thobile has captured the business value within the built environment, cement and concrete industry

Pioneer of Innovation Award
This award recognises a Pioneer of Innovation, a woman who is passionately and innovatively leveraging new technology, information, processes or management with the aim of being more proactive, productive, and essential to creating business value within the built environment, cement and concrete industry.
New Starter of the year (Under 30 years)
The candidate for this award is an up and comer who has put themselves out there and has been identified as the one "to watch" as they get a foothold within their sectors.
Young entrepreneur/rising star Award (under 40 years)
Young women are shaping the future of construction in Africa today with tremendous dedication and energy. This award provides a platform to unearth and recognise that inspirational and exciting leader of tomorrow (under 40 years of age).
Woman in Architecture Award
The story of every woman in architecture is important, as each has her own struggles and hurdles. It is from this understanding that the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), in its work with the Women in Architecture SA (WiASA) initiative, promotes this particular Award for Women in Architecture.
Woman in concrete: Lifetime achievement award
The Woman in concrete: Lifetime achievement award is given to an individual in recognition of outstanding efforts and enduring contribution to the concrete, cement and construction industry. This award may only be won once by a member.
Woman in Media and Communications Excellence
This category will showcase an outstanding woman who is actively involved in any aspect of communications (PR, editor, journalist, corporate communications) in the built environment (construction, cement and concrete industries). The award seeks to showcase an extraordinary caliber in delivering information and will recognize her unwavering commitment and communications skills.
Most Innovative Women Training programme
The focus is on "blue collar" innovative training programmes upskilling individuals and women owned SMME's. Are you an external training provider, a department within the public sector or a company with a successful in-house training programme?
Excellence in Career Development
This award recognises and honours the extraordinary efforts of companies and public agencies that have demonstrated leadership and dedication and who promote leadership and career advancement for women in the industry through mentoring, recognition, educational activities and networking. We are looking for organisations who have clear policies, processes and procedures which are geared towards women in construction.
